Not just the crazy cues but also the outrageous prices. However, for today - my craving for a vegetable dumpling won out. It also helped that there were close to no lines at lunch hour (around 12.30pm).<br />
<br />
We weren't super hungry, so we only ordered a couple of dishes. First and foremost, the spinach and shrimp dumplings ($7.80). This had the most amazingly thin crystal dumpling skin super delicious and plentiful spinach filling. YUM! I could eat plates and plates of this I think.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/BCB70D06-46D8-4966-B66B-94B737BC69B0_zpsrnazh3bt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/BCB70D06-46D8-4966-B66B-94B737BC69B0_zpsrnazh3bt.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
As per all our yum cha experiences, the pork and prawn dumplings had to be ordered ($7.80). This was a huge disappointment. Really dismal looking. Really not any better than siu mai from elsewhere.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/51B48233-EA1A-4416-BBB0-4F3D912ABABE_zpsjzrj8hm0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/51B48233-EA1A-4416-BBB0-4F3D912ABABE_zpsjzrj8hm0.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The rice rolls with sesame sauce was pretty tasty. Silky smooth rolls drenched in a sweet sesame sauce. Can't really go too wrong.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F8E4527C-1128-4229-AD08-B1010BB63F0C_zpsojxamhxj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F8E4527C-1128-4229-AD08-B1010BB63F0C_zpsojxamhxj.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The last thing we ordered was one of their specials - the crystal shrimp roll with century egg. I've never steamed rice paper rolls before. Now I know that it just becomes really sticky. An epic slab of prawn meat with a small slice of century egg and fish roe. Hubby quite liked this dumpling but I felt like there was waaaaaayyyyy too much prawn meat in this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/EF11802D-E3FA-4ADC-9CA3-21BB1AB7E6C9_zpszwyrsi11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/EF11802D-E3FA-4ADC-9CA3-21BB1AB7E6C9_zpszwyrsi11.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I think that Tim Ho Wan in Burwood is not bad. Extravagant prices aside, the service, ambiance and wait times were all quite reasonable.<br />

Being in the Southern Highlands, it's relatively close to Sydney but after a yummy meal, it seemed more fitting to just stay the night also. Lucky for us, Biota offers a stay and dine package - 5 or 7 course meal with accommodation (twin share). <br />
<br />
We opted for the 5 course meal. The food, service and ambiance combined all led to a really pleasant and relaxing experience. Several snacks were offered before the first course. This included a thing pear 'roll-up' with sheeps milk, goose ham, a cute little bowl of tasty fish roe and summer flowers, as well as an acacia seed eclair that you dip into a warm, raw hen's yolk.<br />

Bread was bought to the table is these warm mole skins - toasty warm house baked dark rye bread rolls with really smooth and delicious cultured butter.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

First course was an oyster with leek and cucumber. As my father can't eat raw foods, his oyster was substituted with a confit tomato. The oyster in the dish was really fresh and super sweet. Pretty amazing. I also loved the sweetness in the leek.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Course two was a slab of really tender pork belly, hidden underneath some greens and served with a tasty dallop of eel custard.<br />

<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/49B16F60-D372-4796-98CC-DABBA7E39023_zpslda8clxy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/49B16F60-D372-4796-98CC-DABBA7E39023_zpslda8clxy.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>

The next dish was house-milled single origin wheat noodles with a rooster stock and a dehydrated hens yolk. Dad's substitute was this plate of delicious smelling mushroom pasta.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The last savoury course was lamb. The lamb was all covered with pickled carrots and served with a blackberry sauce. My parents and hubby all loved it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Pre-dessert was a honey-softie - a milk icecream with honeycomb. It was a really good palate cleanser- subtly sweet and quite refreshing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6745A19A-BC9D-48C1-8251-4E0609FB5344_zpszgr8ahgo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6745A19A-BC9D-48C1-8251-4E0609FB5344_zpszgr8ahgo.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Dessert was 'mums roses' served in these really intriguing stone bowls. Good use of liquid nitrogen to make the sorbet. It worked well with the peaches and cream.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/438ECB9D-095D-4C84-AFDE-3D074529BE73_zps5nainalq.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/438ECB9D-095D-4C84-AFDE-3D074529BE73_zps5nainalq.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>

All up - it was a really good dining and staying experience. The food, service and ambiance were all awesome and the rooms were also really clean, pleasant and comforting.<br />

It was a slightly difficult choice as 2 pretty popular cafes were right next to one another on Wilkes Ave but at the end, we opted for Salvage Specialty Coffee (as it had pretty high ratings on bean hunter :P).<br />
<br />
We were seated quickly and served quickly - impressive. Coffee here was likewise impressive. Disappointing that they only have one size of coffee cos I would have loved a large cup of my skim capp.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/2FA43360-7E86-4E5B-8B2D-B1470DDBA6F2_zpsbtorgn4n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/2FA43360-7E86-4E5B-8B2D-B1470DDBA6F2_zpsbtorgn4n.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Food-wise, the blackboard offered lots of temptations. Even though there wasn't tons of options, there were many that we wanted to try. After intense discussions with the waitress and much deliberation, we finally opted for the Sloppy Salv (?? I actually forget the name...) and the Croque Madame (which was a weekend special).<br />
<br />
The sloppy salv was a brioche burger containing some really tomatoey and slightly spicey mince bolognese. It reminded hubby of a MOS burger. It was definitely sloppy - pretty much falling apart. But pretty tasty :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/944E9D26-2B49-4B3B-A975-F2092A9FC9E0_zpsg7sofmoi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/944E9D26-2B49-4B3B-A975-F2092A9FC9E0_zpsg7sofmoi.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The Croque Madame was exquisite. A perfectly soft-poached egg with delicious running yolk sat atop my toasty of black forest gypsy ham (super tasty), swiss gruyere, and dijon. The other half of my toasty was topped with creamy delicious bechamel sauce. Loved every bite of this crunchy, soggy, tasty, flavoursome concoction. YUM!<br />

All up, I liked this place. Coffee is good. It's chillaxy. The food is really tasty. Definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.<br />

Being inside Strathfield plaza, there was a bit of a hitch in finding the place - as "HoJiak" actually isn't the name plastered ... it has "Penang Express" on the shop front and has that "food-court"-y type feel. Nonetheless, enough people seem to have found the place to make it quite buzzing and happening. <br />
<br />
Hubby ordered their Hainan Chicken Rice. It's pleasant. The chicken is average and the rice is also decent. Not dazzling though unfortunately. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A098A5B5-33BC-429A-9DBB-A3405BEC2A1D_zpsdix63tvt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A098A5B5-33BC-429A-9DBB-A3405BEC2A1D_zpsdix63tvt.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
My Prawn Mee was more impressive. Fragrantly aromatic and loads of flavour. It was pretty delicious. The noodles were wonderful in soaking in the tasty soup. I think it could have been improved by having real prawns instead of prawn cocktails... but you know what? I'd take it. I'd order it again. I also wanted an ice coffee but as they'd "run out", I had to opt for the Teh Terik instead (milk tea) which disappointingly, was pre-made, pre-packaged and slightly over-sweet.<br />

So all up, this is not a bad place for some Malay food. Lots of flavours in the soup for my noodles. But you know what? Temasek (in Parra) isn't too far away and that's also pretty delish! :)<br />

I had seen lots of yummy photos from this place so anticipation was high. Their menu consists of "seed" (entree sized) and "feed" (main sized) all meant for sharing. For the four of us, the waitress recommended 2 seeds and 3 feeds.<br />
<br />
The Oyster Po' Boy was recommended to us by our waitress. Crunchy deep fried oysters with mayo and coleslaw enveloped between two English muffin buns. Sliders in size, it was tasty but<i> </i>definitely not worth it's price tag ($24 for two). For $12 a pop, I can think of many many tasty burgers from elsewheres. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/8F96464F-3178-45A6-A10F-59642BD39F7E_zpshcp1rek0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/8F96464F-3178-45A6-A10F-59642BD39F7E_zpshcp1rek0.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
We also got their smoked trout from their 'seed' (entree size) menu. The trout was perfectly cooked with a subtle hint of smokiness. Loved the mix of cauliflower, carrot, pickled mix. Also really enjoyed the crispy fish skin. The 'everything bagel' was my favourite type of bagel in NYC and these everything bagel crisps were likewise quite tasty. I thought that the dish worked and was pretty awesome.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0DB42A84-6E75-4015-833A-5ABC5B65DB34_zpsyuezught.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0DB42A84-6E75-4015-833A-5ABC5B65DB34_zpsyuezught.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Hubby and I like the 'smokiness' of food. One of our friends did not and so I think his enjoyment of the meal went downhill from here. The sweet potato came as pretty as a picture. Really soft and sweetly glazed with smoked honey, and topped with hazelnuts, goats curd and bbq mushrooms, it was a delight to see. I'm not a huge fan of sweet potato, but hubby and our other friend seemed to approve.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D7E72252-14F5-4C44-8D75-0300ACF1FFFC_zpsxwdqvb3f.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D7E72252-14F5-4C44-8D75-0300ACF1FFFC_zpsxwdqvb3f.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The smokiness continued on into our pulled pork. I quite liked it. It was soft and tender. Some people would say mush? The really thick slice of maple bacon was also pretty good. And who can say no to crackling? It was served with some fresh green apple and yoghurt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/C6AAACB7-2CA6-4DFB-8C45-DB8338B44ED9_zpsdprxbvmj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/C6AAACB7-2CA6-4DFB-8C45-DB8338B44ED9_zpsdprxbvmj.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Hartsyard is also famous for their fried chicken - so we knew we had to order it. It was a good 4 pieces of chicken. Crunchy outside and juicy meat. Served with a buttermilk biscuit (damper like thing) that none of us really appreciated, and gravy. What can I say? It was good but not $33 worth of good? We can get pretty damn amazing Korean fried chicken for that price!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6241A05A-0AF7-4E89-A71C-9AF222254ECA_zps0dshmx5a.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6241A05A-0AF7-4E89-A71C-9AF222254ECA_zps0dshmx5a.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Last but not least - dessert. We knew that we had to get their famous soft serve however reluctant we were to pay $12 for a soft serve. It better be bloody amazing! As I don't actually even remember the flavour of the soft serve... cinnamon? with a choc doughnut on the side? ... I don't know... you can probably ascertain how much we enjoyed and savoured it.... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0530C533-2C42-49AA-B1A3-FB3353485D81_zpsnbmfan9m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0530C533-2C42-49AA-B1A3-FB3353485D81_zpsnbmfan9m.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
All up, the food was OK but I was quite disappointed with the experience. This is American bar food cooked reasonably but with a close to fine dining type price tag. Not cool.<br />

We didn't know how long it would take for them to make our pizzas so we decided to call ahead. My darling hubby called without even consulting their menu and ordered based on faith "just give me 3 of the most popular pizzas". What <i>really</i> shocked me was when they said that the order would be ready in 5 mins. We were <i>not</i> 5 mins away - floored on the accelerator!<br />
<br />
On our way there, we rationalised that there was no way our pizzas could be done in 5 mins... maybe we just misheard 50 mins? But nope - lo and behold, pizza was waiting patiently for us as we pulled into the store 15 mins later. The pizzas that our kind waitress ordered for us was the Tartufo, the Napoli and the Prosciutto.<br />
<br />
You could smell the Tartufo pizza before even opening the box - rich truffle smells just wafted out. This was an amazing pizza with italian sausage, porcini, fior di latte (cheese) and truffle paste. These toppings were a heavenly match, all sitting atop an amazing thin yet chewy base. YUM! Definitely dreaming of this pizza!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/89914A64-E72B-405A-9BF0-DEC71E9529EB_zpshi71lrai.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/89914A64-E72B-405A-9BF0-DEC71E9529EB_zpshi71lrai.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The Napoli was slightly less interesting. Loads of san marzano tomato paste with olives, anchovy, garlic and oregano. Quite tasty still... but I would have loved double the cheese! I guess this pizza is showcasing the tomato.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/8B5C64D3-51C7-4C08-801B-012D9C5E6BD2_zpsqj2fpwja.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/8B5C64D3-51C7-4C08-801B-012D9C5E6BD2_zpsqj2fpwja.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The last is my usual favourite (only this time, it is outdone by the truffle). The Prosciutto pizza had rocket, Parmesan, cherry tomatoes and of course - prosciutto. Loads of topping. Definitely appreciated the abundance of rocket. Very tasty indeed. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F5D1A277-F0DD-4906-9FCD-6E005BC51F64_zpsxiaqd1bv.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F5D1A277-F0DD-4906-9FCD-6E005BC51F64_zpsxiaqd1bv.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
So the pizza were delicious even though they were sitting for some time on the counter. Imagine how tasty they would be if we ate in store! Definitely need to go back for some more truffle pizza! :)<br />

It gives off a relaxed vibe and an old-school style. The waiters are heavily accented but quite friendly. Given the concreteness of the restaurant, it gets super noisy as human voices bounce around the room.<br />
<br />
As a party of four, we decided to just order dishes to share. We opted for two entree dishes - the meatballs and the pork fingers. The meatballs were reasonably bite sized and packed full of cheesy flavour. There was also quite a delicious tomatoey sauce that covered the meatballs. The pork fingers were lightly crumbed and eaten with an oniony-yoghurt sauce. There was also an intense mustard flavour to the soft pulled-pork innards.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We chose three pastas. Two of the pastas were part of their specials for the day. Due to the noise and the waiter's accent, I don't quite remember exactly what they were, just that one was a creamy risotto with scampi, and the other was a pappardelle with sausage and mushrooms. The risotto was quite tasty - scampi give or take, but the cheesy creaminess and the al-dente rice created pretty awesome rich flavours all round. The pappardelle was not bad either. Slightly creamy, slightly tomatoey and again, perfectly cooked pasta. Whilst both pastas were delicious, what surprised me most was the gnocchi with turkey that we ordered. Not that it was better than the other pastas. Just that I've never liked gnocchi (like EVER) but this gnocchi is beginning to change my mind. The gnocchi was really fluffy and pillowy - not dense or carby like the normal ones, and the turkey meat added the right amount of saltiness to it all.<br />

Other than the pastas, we also ordered the grilled scotch mushroom (sorry about the photo.... I didn't take it...). Having no expectations of what a scotch mushroom was like, it ended up as a plate of thin grilled scotch fillet steaks with juicy mushrooms and wilted greens. The steak was cooked well - tender enough. But I think I would have been happy enough with just tons of the mushrooms (which was really flavourful as it soaked in all the meat juices) and the wilted greens.<br />

Dessert-wise, nothing really appealed. And, Messina was just next door (even the waiter agreed). So... Messina we went.<br />

However, I was pleasantly surprised at how amazing the dinner reception at QVB Tea Room was at a friend's wedding recently. The stunning environment - high ceilings elegantly painted with amazing chandeliers - simply just adds to the dining experience.<br />
<br />
For our friend's wedding, we had the entree options of the prawn tortellini and the pork belly. Pork belly had been promised to me at many-a-weddings before, most failing to deliver being either too dry (but with good crackling) or succulent (but the crackling is a soggy mess). It's hard to get it right. But OMG - this pork belly was superb! Really good crackling AND melt-in-your-mouth meat. And that was what everyone around the table was saying. Definitely good effort from the kitchen! The prawn tortellini was also a standout. Really plump and fully filled with prawn, the squid-inked pasta was cooked just right. It came with creamed corn and a tomato salsa. Yup - I could eat more of this dish too!<br />

The mains were likewise, pretty tasty. The roasted barramundi was perfectly cooked with a bit of crunch (skin) and silky smooth flesh. It was served with royal blue potatoes and a really tasty mustard and parsley sauce. The confit duck leg also had fall-off-the-bone meat and a smooth potato puree. Both mains were well received all round.<br />

They were anything but stingy on the portion sizes with a really big bowl of creme brulee and a big slice of lemon tart for dessert. The creme brulee had a good toffee coating (which I Loved!) and the vanillary custard was smooth and just the right amount of sweet. The lemon tart with clotted cream and raspberry sauce was also good. The base might have been a bit bleh but the citrusy custard was delish!<br />

Definitely one of the tastiest meals we have had at a wedding! Oh - and of course, the bride and groom were absolutely stunning!!!!! :)<br />

Automata - with ex-chef from Momofuku (Clayton Wells) - is one of these new kids on the block setting up shop in the newly refurbished Old Clare Hotel.<br />
<br />
The vibe is on-trend. Hipster and slightly industrial with funky looking lights and part of an aircraft engine as it's decor. Several shared long communal tables both down and upstairs which seem good for groups but slightly too close for comfort when eating with strangers. Waiters here also give off that 'I'm uber cool and chilled' vibe.<br />
<br />
Offering a 5 course degustation, Automata sets us off with some tasty snacks. There is the really tender and sweet storm clams with a rosemary dashi and cream, as well as fried fish skin with a yuzu kosho. Both are delicious starts for the evening. I found the combination of rosemary and dashi to be a daring pairing - but it worked surprisingly really really well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/71AF1EC6-B62A-48A9-9097-24F7795B1C54_zpsmr9vwlaq.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/71AF1EC6-B62A-48A9-9097-24F7795B1C54_zpsmr9vwlaq.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The first course was a plate of asparagus, lots of little stumps of them - all wrapped with sesame leaf and with a umeboshi paste sandwiched between the asparagus and the leaf. It was quite interesting. The flavour of the umeboshi is a tad overpowering, but it's not a taste I disliked. Oh - and there's some wakame on top just to make it more visually interesting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/942832CE-EBEF-4EA8-9031-EA4D62F6CA74_zpsmtyt5bcc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/942832CE-EBEF-4EA8-9031-EA4D62F6CA74_zpsmtyt5bcc.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Bread comes in after the first course. This is really soft and warm house made bread rolls with an absolutely amazing pumpkin seed and anchovy whipped butter. I was not eating bread with butter. I was eating butter with bread. This whipped butter is SOOOOO delicious I want it on everything!!!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4B44DDA6-EF8F-40C3-94BC-9D6C13A444F2_zpsz1q00ngw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4B44DDA6-EF8F-40C3-94BC-9D6C13A444F2_zpsz1q00ngw.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Course two is a steamed hapuka - perfectly perfectly steamed - sitting on a bed of really smooth and super flavourful cured roe emulsion and topped with a roasted sheet of seaweed. It may not look like much, but it smelt and tasted amazing! The fish just flaked off and was smooth enough to melt in your mouth. I think that this was my favourite dish of the night.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm not sure if it's teething problems of if we were just dining (on a Wednesday) at a bad time of the night, but after the fish, service slowed considerably... like really really slowed. Being seated so close to other diners on a communal table meant that it gave you tons of time to eavesdrop (unintentionally) on everyone else's thoughts, feelings and dreams. The first of the meats to come was the slow roasted quail - cooked two ways - served with red witlof, and a burnt apple and caper sauce. The witlof was a pleasant bitter addition to the reasonably well cooked quail. Again - the dish required you to 'unwrap' the parcel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/892E262E-B91A-4FCF-B7BD-548824949910_zpsdxachtga.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/892E262E-B91A-4FCF-B7BD-548824949910_zpsdxachtga.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/1A1C59AA-DA23-4C85-A6DB-2B913FBA12A7_zpsd72tzwrn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/1A1C59AA-DA23-4C85-A6DB-2B913FBA12A7_zpsd72tzwrn.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Again after a really long wait, our last savory course arrived. It smelt AMAZING! It was a slab of inside skirt topped with a variety of mushrooms and embellished with a tamari and brown butter, and a glop of eggplant puree. It was good. It was packed full of flavour. The meat is a little chewy but definitely forgivable because of all the delicious tastes mixing in your mouth.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F1D04357-8D69-4EF6-83CF-8BA7E088A885_zpskwrpycq1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F1D04357-8D69-4EF6-83CF-8BA7E088A885_zpskwrpycq1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Last but not least, there is dessert. The couple sitting next to us didn't like it much. I don't think it was sweet enough of their tastes. However, hubby and I loved it! It was a pumpkin seed sorbet (more creamy than a sorbet... it was really just an icecream), with a bitters meringue and dehydrated mandarin. It was a good combo of crunchy and smooth, subtle sweetness and light bitterness. I'm pretty sure we both polished it off.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So all up, this new restaurant lives up to it's hype. Pretty tasty food. Reasonable value for money. Some daring flavours and combinations. Definitely worth a try!<br />

My friend is a huge fan of Quay (particularly their desserts) and could not wait to dine in this new restaurant. My hubby, on the other hand, had some reservation. He didn't like the 'fusion' element of Quay. Likewise, my last experience at this venue (when it was the previous restaurant Guillaume), left my wanting more. Lucky for both of us, Peter Gilmore's new Mod Australian restaurant (focusing tons on the flavour of local produce) exceeded both of our expectations!<br />
<br />
Being inside the iconic structure, it was a dining experience with wonderful views (and for this sunny afternoon - plenty of young kids plastering their faces to the window). The staff were friendly and nice, and patient enough with our indecisiveness - which is lucky cos I think we all wanted to order everything on the menu. The freshly baked bread, warm, crunchy crusted and with super soft innards helped with our decisions... maybe?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/53125195-F5BA-4B47-A9DB-4F7E63CE98CE_zpsuokfapl0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/53125195-F5BA-4B47-A9DB-4F7E63CE98CE_zpsuokfapl0.jpg" height="292" width="320" /></a></div>
Opting for the 3 course menu, we managed to all order a different entree. Our friend's beef tartare was a hidden gem under a pile of puffed grains, mushrooms, sesame, and seaweed. Like it should be, the egg yolk was placed on top perfectly. The smoked Blackmore Wagyu was mixed with a fermented chilli paste. Getting a sense that this is packed full of flavour?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F3D35138-D9A8-42FA-9C81-144B56DB6AD2_zpsodyofj7t.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F3D35138-D9A8-42FA-9C81-144B56DB6AD2_zpsodyofj7t.jpg" height="319" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Our other friend opted for a safe and surely to be amazing entree of scallops. Three delicately and perfectly seared massive sea scallops accompanied with spring vegetables, a creme fraiche emulsion, lemon jam, herbs and flowers - all for a really neat and clean feel to the dish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/1ED4116A-2388-4AA9-8757-2E622808808F_zpshgppnr30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/1ED4116A-2388-4AA9-8757-2E622808808F_zpshgppnr30.jpg" height="298" width="320" /></a></div>
My went for an entree of slow cooked quail. This was a soft and succulent square of quail meat hidden under cultured and fermented grains, a brioche cream, really tasty mushrooms and jerusalem artichoke. Lots of crunch. Loads of mushies. It made for a good flavour combo.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0C755B8F-58A0-452C-8A3A-3CB51701755A_zpsdzl7ffrc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0C755B8F-58A0-452C-8A3A-3CB51701755A_zpsdzl7ffrc.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Although all three entrees were delish, hubby's entree was the winner - a really big, super nicely grilled Lady Elliot Island bug. Loads of sweetness, perfectly cooked bug. It came with nice little organic turnip cylinders, radishes and flavoured with XO sauce. YUM~<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/3F051E22-C162-4844-90CA-5BC4BEB3217F_zps9nressyg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/3F051E22-C162-4844-90CA-5BC4BEB3217F_zps9nressyg.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
On to the mains - hubby and one friend ordered the duck. Two substantial pieces of Holmbrae duck sat amongst raw and pickled hispi cabbage, black miso, freekah and seaweed. It was good. There was flavour. But hubby thought it was ordinary, especially when compared with his entree.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/2DDDCEDD-5007-4749-B723-643B41B98487_zpsvvnokjtu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/2DDDCEDD-5007-4749-B723-643B41B98487_zpsvvnokjtu.jpg" height="288" width="320" /></a></div>
My other friend and I both ordered fish. He got the King George Whiting - a super tasty little fish in and of itself. It was served with three, again perfectly cooked, scallops, leeks, native parsley, celery heart and ice-plant (a flower). He liked it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/071DEA27-366E-45EC-BC43-D06F04C63569_zpsptwjg19a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/071DEA27-366E-45EC-BC43-D06F04C63569_zpsptwjg19a.jpg" height="293" width="320" /></a></div>
I might be biased, but I think that my fish blew his fish out of the water! I got served a whole John Dory (minus the head) on the bone, with orach, turnips, and umami butter. The seasoning on the fish was perfecto. So tasty! And the fish was cooked just right. Fresh and really tasty. And so much of it! You even get a nice little theatrical hand towel (you know how we used to have those t-shirts which went from being tiny to normal size when you put it in water? it was the same with this hand towelette) to wipe your hands on after you finish demolishing the fish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/01546AA3-0B33-4B73-A3C3-610D46FBF3D1_zpszgefkape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/01546AA3-0B33-4B73-A3C3-610D46FBF3D1_zpszgefkape.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Oh - and you get these super tasty potatoes and a plate of fresh lettuce with the mains. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/568F3560-CB89-425F-85DA-590A925C0939_zps5qfqmiaw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/568F3560-CB89-425F-85DA-590A925C0939_zps5qfqmiaw.jpg" height="308" width="320" /></a></div>
Now we were onto a much anticipated event for the meal - the dessert. We ordered the same desserts around the table. The Opera-house-looking pavlova and the creme caramel v mille-feuille. Yes the pavlova that looks like an Opera House was inventive in it's looks - but flavour wise? It's a pavlova with really nice tasting cream and meringue. It had nothing, NOTHING on the creme caramel mille feuille. Such a playfully plated dessert which was packed full of caramelly flavour. Not overly sweet, and with tons of textures and temperatures all mixed in. I can't describe it - you just have to taste one for yourself. It was absolutely DELICIOUS I wanted to lick my plate~<br />

Coffee and petit fours were last. Coffee was good (which is saying a lot for restaurant coffee), and the petit fours were these cute little caramel-filled cookies.<br />

So all up, it was a great meal. Really tasty. Playful but with a lot of heart and emphasis on flavour. Hats are on it's way I think. I would definitely recommend this place and would definitely try my best to return :)<br />

But for some reason, I'd never been a fan. Like I know that the produce is fresh and made relatively well, but for that price, I think that you can get the same or better elsewhere. However, it does have a large seating area, making it convenient for our group of 10+ to all fit.<br />
<br />
So at Kitchen by Mike, their menu goes from breakfast to lunch at 12pm. You line up like a good little school child waiting at the cafeteria and you make your selection. Salads are $5+ and meats are around the $15+ range. Everything you put on your plate adds to the amount you pay at the end of the line.<br />
<br />
For this meal, hubby made all the selections. We got a roast chicken and a pork belly, with a cabagge and apple slaw, roasted root vegetable and bread. Came to around $25pp. Really not that cheap for self-service, no presentation style food. The chicken was OK, maybe just a tid bit dry for my liking. The pork belly (was quite a small serve) had good crackling but a ton of fat. If you weren't into eating mouthfuls of fat, there would have been very little of this slab that you could have eaten. The slaw was good. Fresh. Good amount of dressing. And the root vegetable was also decent. Highlight for me was probably the bread and butter. The bread was super soft and delish. The butter was also well churned - creamy and tasty. <br />

Kitchen by Mike is right next to Black Star - so of course that is the obvious dessert choice. I was heaps disappointed that the only cake that seemed to be widely available was the watermelon cake. And if you were buying a big slab like we were, it was the only cake you could purchase. Yeh yeh I know it's big and popular and all that. But I'm not a huge fan and even if it was their best seller, I would want a bigger variety and more choice.<br />

On this particular morning, we just managed to get ourselves a table at West Juliett, only deciding to come here after seeing a pretty amazing-looking salted choc chip cookie.<br />
<br />
Coffee here was decent. And the food served all seemed pretty average. Hubby ordered a bacon and egg roll and I had a haloumi and egg roll. They really did look pretty similar. The bun was a good proportion of crispy and soft. Mine had a ton of chilli mayo on it which gave it a bit more zing. I wish there was a bit more haloumi, but it all went nicely with the spinach and egg. Hubby's bacon and egg got no complaints either. <br />

So that's all good and all that but really the main event came from their house baked goodies cabinet - the pink salt choc chip cookie. This was definitely pricey but definitely very tasty. Crunchy outer ring with a chewy center. Good amount of choc chips. Good sweet to salty ratio. Yum. I have to say though, I have since proceeded to bake choc chip cookies at home and sprinkled pink salt on them - just as tasty!<br />

All up, a pleasant experience. Probably made more pleasant as it was a day off work. Not a bad cafe to stop by for a breaky or brunch.<br />

But for various reasons, it had taken us til now to visit this joint. Post-media hype meant some difficulties in getting a reservation and a bit more forward planning (of which we suck at). The restaurant was small and cozy. Japanese speakers were everywhere - most importantly, in the kitchen - meaning atleast a good level of authenticity.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A2F9A4E7-0D7B-4EB5-BF4B-12ABC135B7C4_zpsf5pajqyc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A2F9A4E7-0D7B-4EB5-BF4B-12ABC135B7C4_zpsf5pajqyc.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
They had a specials page. Out of that, we couldn't resist ordering the Otoro (fatty tuna belly). Our waitress said that the tuna was from Norway - then shipped to Tokyo - and then to us. It was super super fatty, really melt-in-your-mouth and gave off a very mild and subtly sweet flavour. It came at a price though!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/1C8C9D01-EDCA-497C-B990-C940BCBE2006_zpsj8p5nxkx.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/1C8C9D01-EDCA-497C-B990-C940BCBE2006_zpsj8p5nxkx.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Something else from the specials menu was the charcoal grilled extra large Cloudy Bay clams. These were not chewy or tough... but still, slightly underwhelming.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/E986C94A-648C-4C1B-A066-A9A729822268_zpsc8ykthph.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/E986C94A-648C-4C1B-A066-A9A729822268_zpsc8ykthph.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
The Toriciya nigiri set did not disappoint though. The fish were all really fresh and really sweet. The thickness of the nigiri was perfect. There was scampi, tuna, king fish belly, salmon belly, scallop and some other fish that I've completely forgotten the names of. It was all delicious.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/ADC496B4-B3A3-4294-8E49-1EDD028AB85F_zpslbpcpezd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/ADC496B4-B3A3-4294-8E49-1EDD028AB85F_zpslbpcpezd.jpg" height="319" width="320" /></a></div>
As Toriciya is also famous for their skewers ($3 each), we ordered a plenty. There was pork belly, chicken and shallot, japanese sausage, chicken skin, etc. and you could choose between having it basted in sauce or just sprinkled with salt. The skewers were all OK.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A0B0EC59-2CCF-422F-B139-9DEEE5AF5E54_zps155rvorf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A0B0EC59-2CCF-422F-B139-9DEEE5AF5E54_zps155rvorf.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Just to make sure hubby was full, he ordered a triangle rice. This was literally a triangular shaped rice with sauce and fried. It was slightly overpriced for what it was.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0B228B9A-B53C-4B08-97B2-961B7A27F354_zpsychsy1xd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0B228B9A-B53C-4B08-97B2-961B7A27F354_zpsychsy1xd.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Last but not least - dessert! We each got a scoop of icecream. The brownish looking scoop is the roasted green tea icecream whereas the normal green scoop is just normal green tea icecream. I liked my roasted green tea icecream muchly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D178F669-61FE-4072-81D9-59D1A58239EB_zpsqs5frdxl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D178F669-61FE-4072-81D9-59D1A58239EB_zpsqs5frdxl.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
All up, it was a good meal at Toriciya. The produce here is fresh and the package presents itself nicely. It is slightly pricey but I guess fresh produce comes at a cost :)<br />

Having seen lots of yummy photos on Instagram, I was really quite excited. Luckily, their delicious-sounding degustation menu did not disappoint.<br />
<br />
The amuse bouche set a good precedent for the night. I don't remember exactly what it was, just that it was heaps tasty. The cracker was crispy and light, and the sprinklings of seaweed powder on it was awesome! The cream was tasty too... just don't remember what was in the cream... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/63D4E707-732F-442D-99D0-2790FC8ED960_zpsdkrplwcu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/63D4E707-732F-442D-99D0-2790FC8ED960_zpsdkrplwcu.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Unfortunately, course 1 did not appeal to my palate as much as the amuse bouche. There was a wobbly mussel creme caramel with calamari, small grapefruit bits and this green slightly bitter fennel sauce. I didn't really get it. It was all a bit sloppy. The creme caramel's flavour was really subtle and and when combined with the green dallop, it was just a bit weird. Guess its frenchie though.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F8B866F1-EA33-4D6C-80C0-5DBD2D17C854_zpswttjvhce.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F8B866F1-EA33-4D6C-80C0-5DBD2D17C854_zpswttjvhce.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The second course was heaps yummier. Thin scallop pieces lay under avocado mousse, cucumber and carrot thins, and a lemon & ginger beer sorbet. This worked. The sorbet was really refreshing and went well with the scallop ceviche. The thin rice cracker was also a good addition.<br />

The miso glazed Melanda Park pork came next and was super melt-in-your-mouth. It was super tasty with tons of flavour. There were also these little cubes of deep fried pork fat which just disintegrated once bitten. It was pretty amazing! Definitely not for the faint hearted though. The pork was served with celeriac puree, pickled enoki, and some greens. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0B5A0FC1-E4D8-4325-9FCC-B4730EB91B7C_zpsz5rjcn3u.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/0B5A0FC1-E4D8-4325-9FCC-B4730EB91B7C_zpsz5rjcn3u.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The confit duck tortellini was well received by hubby. I agreed that the duck meat was cooked well - really soft and tender. However, the seasoning was a bit heavy. I found it really quite salty. I also felt that the pasta was a bit too thick. The tortellini came with baby carrots, walnuts and a citrus sauce.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/C5FEB1FE-7DA7-4298-877A-1D49D3DAA14D_zps81b6szt1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/C5FEB1FE-7DA7-4298-877A-1D49D3DAA14D_zps81b6szt1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The last meat dish was potato wrapped red wine braised organic wagyu. This was like a high-class sausage roll. The potato pastry was super crispy and crunchy and the beef cubes were tender and with good seasoning in the sauce. I loved the cauliflower puree and the wilted silverbeet. A bone marrow sauce finished the dish off. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/8EE34CFC-7594-4045-A175-4F14A4264E2F_zps3tu6oqsx.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/8EE34CFC-7594-4045-A175-4F14A4264E2F_zps3tu6oqsx.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I also loved the pre-dessert. It was a refreshing sorbet of some sort... parsnip? (I don't remember ... >.<) But it was really good and really delicious!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F5EBDC91-E450-42A1-82AA-F72C4C21A9CA_zpsxgzlgtq9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F5EBDC91-E450-42A1-82AA-F72C4C21A9CA_zpsxgzlgtq9.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The actual dessert was the chocolate nemesis. Super rich chocolate ganache was served with slow roasted pear puree, brioche and a yummy ginger icecream. <br />

All up, I think that it was a pretty good meal. The food was tasty and plentiful - definitely value for money. Service was attentive enough.<br />

Who would have thought?<br />
I feel like Shangri-La has gotten lots of good publicity recently with their food market stint at Vivid, and from when their famous pastry chef (Anna Polyviou) created that epic-looking carrot cake on Master Chef. But until a good friend of mine decided to host their 30th birthday lunch at the Shangri-La, I had no idea that Cafe Mix (the awesome seafood buffet venue) changed into the 'Shayan Quarter' by day, serving up hipster done-up hawker foods.<br />
<br />
I have to say, as the birthday boy organised the whole thing, I don't know exactly what each dish was, nor the intricate details of each dish, but I'll do my best to explain.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/912B571C-7313-4143-AE29-46B019795E88_zpsq8o9x80s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/912B571C-7313-4143-AE29-46B019795E88_zpsq8o9x80s.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
First up, there was a chilli squid dish. A lot of spices seemed to have gone into coating the squid and it was cooked pretty well - super tender, not tough and chewy at all. Enough to set my mouth on fire when a red chilli accidentally ends up attached to the squid, but without the chilli, it was tasty also.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/E4B3AF2E-DB4A-4751-93CE-5B5F1ACE1EE8_zpsinsvtcp4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/E4B3AF2E-DB4A-4751-93CE-5B5F1ACE1EE8_zpsinsvtcp4.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Baos are everywhere nowadays and they definitely made it onto our table. As there was a vegetarian amongst us, he got a tofu bao which he seemed to enjoy muchly. The rest of us got some pretty tasty sticky chilli caramel pork belly baos. It was a good proportion of bao to meat to veges - and ample of yummy sriracha mayo.<br />

Next up were the playful dishes. Green papaya salad bagged with 'Shake me Up' written on top. Have to say - there wasn't much papaya in each bag but we had fun anyway mixing the papaya with a hot, sweet and sour dressing. More shaking was involved with the numbing chicken wings. You put the numbing szechuan salt in with the chicken wings and shake shake shake (kind of like maccas shake shake fries... remember those?). The small arm work-out aside, the chicken wings were actually quite tender and juicy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We also got some greens - just some beans in a belacan-ish sauce? Nothing really to write home about - they were OK. And some fried rice which had quite a lot of ingredients. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this humble-looking fried rice. The right texture, great flavours, good dryness.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Some soft tacos came also - some with a pulled pork type filling, and some with a slow-roasted goat filling. I'm not really a lamb/goat fan but everyone seemed to enjoy the soft meat filling.<br />

There were also some lamb shoulder skewers and some mushroom skewers. The lamb skewers were nicely cumin flavoured (or at least that's what I tasted when I accidentally had a bite) but the winners were the mushroom skewers, which were really really tasty! Mushroom sweetness with a good sweet ish, salty ish, moorish sauce. YUM!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The fish came all deep fried with individual fish pieces deboned and skewered for ease of eating. It was good. The fish was fresh. It was easy to eat.<br />

I feel like, apart from the mushroom skewers, the desserts really stole the show. Not only did my friend have an awesome birthday cake (made presumably by Anna Polyviou's team), but we also got 2 plates of complimentary desserts - which looked really amazingly appetising! There was this bitter chocolate tart with banana, salted peanut caramelised clusters and sesame cracker, fried coconut icecream magnum and some macarons. Looked pretty damn good! My friend's birthday cake was also pretty awesome! I don't exactly know what is it. It was sweet, caramelly ?, crunchy biscuit base with popping candy? Whatever it was, it was pretty tasty :)<br />
<br />
So Shayan Quarter is up-scale hawker food. Playful elements - tick! Wonderful atmosphere - tick! Amazing desserts - tick! Hawker flavours - sometimes tick?<br />

Something warm, something soupy, something hearty - a bowl of thick, creamy Tonkotsu Ramen! In the past few years, the number of ramen joints seems to have boomed. A newcomer to join this tonkotsu trend is Ramen O'san in the Dixon food court.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A53AD882-886F-4C67-B441-81982C5EBC9A_zpsswpvtnku.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A53AD882-886F-4C67-B441-81982C5EBC9A_zpsswpvtnku.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
It doesn't look like much, but it has this massive menu plastered in front. The person who took my order had some difficulties understanding what I wanted but this was eventually sorted out as I ordered the creamy Tonkotsu Ramen (with thin noodles) with egg and a Sumo Ramen for hubby.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/3DF0331D-6E01-45F3-8F1D-58593068BB9F_zpsmq5icxjl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/3DF0331D-6E01-45F3-8F1D-58593068BB9F_zpsmq5icxjl.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Unbeknownst to me, and much to the annoyance to hubby, the Sumo Ramen automatically came with thick style noodles - which just doesn't quite soak up the soup as well. This ramen was half chicken and half pork broth and had two thick pork belly slices with it. The meat was sub-par compared to other ramen places as it wasn't as tender nor as tasty.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/702C3A56-2493-43EC-BCC2-CC381AEF8561_zpsnvnheful.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/702C3A56-2493-43EC-BCC2-CC381AEF8561_zpsnvnheful.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My Creamy Tonkotsu Ramen is different from the normal Tonkotsu Ramen that they offer in the sense that the soup is a bit thicker. It was pretty collagenergic and quite warming. It was extremely filling though, even though it was a relatively small bowl. Must have been because it's so rich and fatty. The soup looked very white and tasted really clean and flavourful. The thin noodles were tasty as was the egg. Unfortunately, that's were the positives stopped. The meat was pretty pale and super thin. Like paper thin. Could have done without it. There was also a large pile of diced onion (raw) which was a bit too intense that it slightly subtracted from the experience. On top of that, there was a dab of chilli in the soup which quickly contaminated the whole bowl. If I asked for chilli, this would have been good. But I didn't ask for chilli and I don't want to taste it in every spoonful!<br />
<br />
So I guess that Ramen O'san is an option if you are craving ramen. However, I think I would prefer to go to Ramen Ikkyu, or Gumshara or Ramen Zundo if I was in that area.<br />

However, due to one reason or another (atrocious weather, unable to make a booking, etc) its taken us a while to get here. Lucky for us, we had chosen an amazingly sunny fine day to eat here - meaning that we had a spectacular view to accompany our wonderful meal.<br />
<br />
We were initially going to share an entree but all those choices sounded soooo delicious that we ended up ordering both the marron and the pork belly (and were disappointed that we couldn't order more entrees).<br />
<br />
Just as our view was picturesque, so too was our marron. It looked stunning, being surrounded by seasonal veges and oh so appetising. It was absolutely delicious! Sweet seafoody juices and plentiful orange aioli. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/FDCAE071-5A90-4B15-A041-4FC2B834C4E1_zpsoqrscfla.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/FDCAE071-5A90-4B15-A041-4FC2B834C4E1_zpsoqrscfla.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The pork belly was likewise satisfying. Crispy crackling and tender pork meat accompanied with perfectly seared large scallops. Little bits of cuttlefish and chorizo sat amongst the lemon emulsion. Dots of a pretty strong piquillo pepper coulis also added to the layers of flavour.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4A240C38-56F2-47DD-951F-49C4BDCB3EE3_zpstfxexraj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4A240C38-56F2-47DD-951F-49C4BDCB3EE3_zpstfxexraj.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
For the mains, hubby ordered a 'glacier 51' toothfish. We had never had toothfish before. Not only is this fish part of the sustainability hype, the texture and flavour of this fish makes me want to order it again and again. It's complex yet really delicate - the meat kind of flakes off. It's quite sweet and quite clean in flavour. It was served with a horseradish tortellini which really should not have made it on the plate. The tortellini was sub par - super thick almost rubbery shell with not much taste to it's innards. The tomato consomme was packed full of flavour and complemented the fish well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/48FCB92B-3620-4197-B4D6-2994893CC85D_zpsbiml1ytt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/48FCB92B-3620-4197-B4D6-2994893CC85D_zpsbiml1ytt.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I get sucked into all things squid ink. If squid ink is on the menu, I'm ordering it! This squid in fettuccine was pretty damn awesome! Cooked perfectly and tossed with tomato and chilli lobster oil. YUM! There were also lots of rather large chunks of lobster - but really, I just want more lobster oil :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/02F202B3-6167-4C1B-A034-CFB81FDCB2FE_zpsmxqkatfk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/02F202B3-6167-4C1B-A034-CFB81FDCB2FE_zpsmxqkatfk.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
We were so full by the end of the mains but I really wanted something sweet to finish off the meal. It was hard to say no to the caramel-centred dark chocolate mousse with valrhona milk chocolate icecream. The feuilletine crumble was also excellent. It was gooey, not overly sweet, smooth but with crunchy bits. The only thing that didn't need to be there is the gold foil. When will we learn that we don't need to eat gold?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/084BE967-50AA-48A8-9293-78DE45E570BA_zpsqvzi2tl3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/084BE967-50AA-48A8-9293-78DE45E570BA_zpsqvzi2tl3.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
All up, it was a great experience. Really relaxing location with yummy food. It is a tad on the expensive side though (and really easy to be carried away with ordering just about everything on the menu).<br />

I'm in!<br />
<br />
The Devonshire does this pretty awesome deal every Friday lunch time. The menu changes from week to week - they post it up on their FB page most of the time. As amazing as it sounds, it's actually taken me a (long) while to get here - you know, with the whole working a full time job not in the city type deal... But I have to say, this place is so awesome that it might just be worth that day off work ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/5CD21FD1-024F-48A2-A7DB-C10F56C1CB94_zps6thbvcaf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/5CD21FD1-024F-48A2-A7DB-C10F56C1CB94_zps6thbvcaf.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
We walk into this intimate, classy little mirror-laden room to be served by two really friendly waiters. It's all a little Frenchie and a little bit posh. We a quickly given a little wooden slab with two types of butter - housemade honey butter and normal salted butter - cut perfectly I might add, and two piping hot, fresh out of the over baguettes which is just oh so heavenly (especially when the slightly sweetened honey butter melts all over the super soft hot bready innards)... I take such a liking to their honey butter that I am soon using the bread as an accompaniment to my butter, much to my hubby's amusement.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/670A3ABC-8F0E-4DD6-8646-BB2A89D027FD_zpsvaxeowq7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/670A3ABC-8F0E-4DD6-8646-BB2A89D027FD_zpsvaxeowq7.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Our entree for this Friday was a smoked pork belly beignet. Perfectly crumbed and golden brown, full of flavour and just pull apart meat, all sitting happily on a pool of celeriac veloute. This celeriac veloute was mindblowingly good. So smooth, so rich, so creamy and oh so so soooooo good. Pickled fennel and apple added a good balance to the dish. And did I say that the veloute was mindblowingly good??? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/14646E2C-0709-43F5-A000-7D2ECC4D7DEF_zpsbqlfb4hw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/14646E2C-0709-43F5-A000-7D2ECC4D7DEF_zpsbqlfb4hw.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
For the main, we had seared Barramundi with potato noodles and an orange, pine nut and chive salad. The fish was cooked perfectly - well seasoned and silky smooth. Hubby didn't like the potato noodles much... it was a bit fiddly in the mouth. But the side of potatoes that we ordered were pretty fantastic. Triple cooked for that extra crunch and with a rich garlicky aroma. YUM!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/EF991894-C47D-4C59-B37F-C3C4771341D7_zpsyur9xqry.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/EF991894-C47D-4C59-B37F-C3C4771341D7_zpsyur9xqry.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6F5C6386-412A-4A92-81E1-EB56C6ACC38A_zpsnctfzrte.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6F5C6386-412A-4A92-81E1-EB56C6ACC38A_zpsnctfzrte.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Dessert was a bittersweet chocolate mousse with a rum & raisin milk sorbet and chocolate biscuit crumble. The mousse was not the least bit sweet - perfect for dark chocolate lovers but a nightmare for sweet-tooths. However, it did combine well with the sweetness of the sorbet. The crumble also added good texture.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D58261B1-F96B-43FB-840F-E0B147288014_zpsztkslmb0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D58261B1-F96B-43FB-840F-E0B147288014_zpsztkslmb0.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
So for $35 (less if you have an Entertainment Book), this is probably the best value fine-dining quality lunch you can get. Pretty amazing stuff - I'd definitely be back for more!<br />

One of the institutions captilising on this fluffy bun trend is Belly Bao. Located within the GoodGod bar, the dining areas are PACKED on the Thursday night that we visited. The main reason for that is their 'baoger' - the promise of a super juicy burger with a really soft 'bao' bun.<br />
<br />
Due to the number of patrons for the night, it took FOREVER for the food to come. Half an hour in to waiting, we finally got our wings and baos. The wings were pretty deliciousness. Crunchy batter and super juicy tender chicken. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/8DF6A63F-E0F7-4802-92C7-AC2C13311562_zpsxzhrcfx0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/8DF6A63F-E0F7-4802-92C7-AC2C13311562_zpsxzhrcfx0.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The baos were also quite good. The buns were soft enough (not not as soft as Momofuku ones). Hubby got the crackling roast pork belly bao. The crackling was really good and the pork belly was soft and tender. My braised beef short rib, served with kimchi, was also quite good. Soft flaky sweet ish beef with all it's juices. Hard to say no to it. Our friends got slow braised pork belly ones and no real complaints from them either.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/590148FF-13C9-4451-BA07-BB52A12668AA_zpsil5yjhhl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/590148FF-13C9-4451-BA07-BB52A12668AA_zpsil5yjhhl.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
After a whole hour of us waiting (rather impatiently) we finally got our burgers. It was quite a decent sized burger. The bun was nice and soft with toasted sesame seeds plastered over. The patty was juicy and cooked well and who can say no to the really tasty mayo sauce? There was also a good handful of veges/pickles and yummy melted cheese. I have to say, it was a good burger. But was it worth an hour wait??? probably not....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/89C0501D-E0E4-4574-A4D5-C3F81CE661CB_zpshwghpxng.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/89C0501D-E0E4-4574-A4D5-C3F81CE661CB_zpshwghpxng.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
We also had sweet potato chips with spicy mayo. Crispy yes. But nothing too special.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/ED3F13B5-5440-4987-B906-9818319458E0_zpsv9vnafdo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/ED3F13B5-5440-4987-B906-9818319458E0_zpsv9vnafdo.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
All up, the food was pretty good. However, it was a bit too crowded and the service a bit too lacking. Despite the yummy burger, I'm a bit hesitant to return. <br />

I've been to Green Peppercorn in Fairfield but I'd never been to their Sydney joint. Our friends, however, swear that this is one of their favourite Thai places and come here on a regular basis. We also ordered much of their favourite dishes.<br />
<br />
The Charcoal OX tongue didn't look too pretty but it was absolutely deliciousness. It was flavourful, succulent and slightly chewy. Pretty yum, especially with the special dipping sauce.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/17F93ADA-CA52-463F-9162-8CD175B7377E_zpsjkgcxr1d.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/17F93ADA-CA52-463F-9162-8CD175B7377E_zpsjkgcxr1d.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The chicken feet salad was another favourite. De-boned chicken feet is heaps easy to eat. Slightly chilli but packed full of flavour. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/32428378-1792-4BF2-A4A4-CE33D1600792_zpsi1u1tisd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/32428378-1792-4BF2-A4A4-CE33D1600792_zpsi1u1tisd.jpg" height="282" width="320" /></a></div>
Pad thai is always my favourite go-to dish. The pad thai here was pretty good - slightly too chilli for me when I mixed in all the the chilli flakes, but otherwise, not too bad a noodle dish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/DC05A12A-9317-4276-B296-B1AFC1AF8059_zpsx5q7wdjk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/DC05A12A-9317-4276-B296-B1AFC1AF8059_zpsx5q7wdjk.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
One of the specials was their pork knuckle. It was massive!!! Crispy skinned, caramelised sweet sauce, fall-off-the-bone meat. Cannot complain - I was in pork heaven :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D15C2437-02A2-469A-B0BA-8B6EF2AFB506_zpsvboj6x47.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D15C2437-02A2-469A-B0BA-8B6EF2AFB506_zpsvboj6x47.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Dessert-wise, our friends order their fried icecream every single time. Delicious caramelised sweet sauce, flaky thin filo pastry and a good amount of nuts to add the crunch. Pretty deliciousness.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/CF5BB7A8-4BDF-43DA-8C6C-53FC9702E9D7_zpsbstrnvss.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/CF5BB7A8-4BDF-43DA-8C6C-53FC9702E9D7_zpsbstrnvss.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I wanted to try their mango coconut dessert with coconut jelly, coconut milk and sago. It was really really good. I loved it! Really refreshing, not too sweet, a good combination of flavours. YUM!<br />

All up, a pretty good dinner. Would love to come back again sometime.<br />

We braved the torrential rains that night and headed to Freshwater to dine at Pilu and was greeted by really nice and friendly waitstaff. Needless to say, the beautiful ocean view was denied for the night.<br />
<br />
Because of our indecisive natures, the degustation was the ideal choice for the night. We were initially served with a welcome gift of savoury cookies. These cookies were pretty tasty, slightly cheesy in flavour and definitely served to whet our appetite.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/48A53FF6-052C-435A-AA3F-83A70FE8F5E3_zpsofiaggng.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/48A53FF6-052C-435A-AA3F-83A70FE8F5E3_zpsofiaggng.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The bread we got for the night was freshly baked, warm, crunchy outsides and soft innards. The butter was nicely whipped and quite tasty.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A1E0B45F-02E0-413D-8EDF-3C6937D011E8_zpscj6i5guq.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A1E0B45F-02E0-413D-8EDF-3C6937D011E8_zpscj6i5guq.jpg" height="301" width="320" /></a></div>
The first course we got was the Hiramasa kingfish. Thinly sliced really sweet kingfish was accentuated with the mild spice of friggitelli and pine nut pesto, and a really delicious side salad of corn (and singular caper). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/1F1F1D32-71E7-4B14-9305-E66BC0AB021C_zps6qqbnu3e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/1F1F1D32-71E7-4B14-9305-E66BC0AB021C_zps6qqbnu3e.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The next course smelt delicious but was rather confusing. Mr Giovanni came out and served the milky, cheesy pecorino consomme himself and poured it atop the tiny hand-rolled fregola, sweet pumpkin cubes and cavolo nero (ie the green stuff). It was so fragrant... but a bit of a let down. But then again, I've never been a fan of soupy rice, whatever flavour it may be.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/FA0FBFBC-F9DF-40E9-B059-9E9EB6106023_zpsfyd6atmz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/FA0FBFBC-F9DF-40E9-B059-9E9EB6106023_zpsfyd6atmz.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I found the next pasta dish was much more appetising, even if it initially did look like little green worms on a plate. The parsley flavour in the pasta mixed really well with the orange chilli paint in the bowl. Bits of mussels and chickpeas were mixed in, but the pasta and sauce itself was tasty enough.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6D763E70-B68D-4461-9C76-383DD3525565_zpszprtkqb7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6D763E70-B68D-4461-9C76-383DD3525565_zpszprtkqb7.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Next up was the fish. A perfectly cooked piece of Mulloway sat atop the most sweet and deliciously charred cabbage. Yummy buttery shrooms were good but not necessary on the plate. The black paint was delicious squid ink. The orange mustard sauce was slightly less so.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4C3C8BDF-4D7B-46EA-8D92-4A87D1CE96F1_zpspkjxnowy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4C3C8BDF-4D7B-46EA-8D92-4A87D1CE96F1_zpspkjxnowy.jpg" height="320" width="294" /></a></div>
Next up was Pilu's famous suckling pig. You definitely don't get much of this signature dish but the bits that you do get are wonderfully deliciousness. The skin is crispy and the meat is really nice and tender and flavoursome. You get sides of pickled raddish, cabbage and roast potatoes. All really tasty really.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/7A7473D4-C517-4B70-B130-A9623E4312E5_zpsa06f075w.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/7A7473D4-C517-4B70-B130-A9623E4312E5_zpsa06f075w.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Dessert-wise was a bit of let down for me. But that's probably cos non-chocolate desserts are not my preference. The more refreshing of the two desserts was the textures of pear. A soft-poached pear with pear sorbet. I think if you like pear, you would like this. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/39A26C76-6A7B-4A7B-B356-11C76F6510FF_zpskqq5gzlw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/39A26C76-6A7B-4A7B-B356-11C76F6510FF_zpskqq5gzlw.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The other dessert, and the finale of the night was a Sardinian fried pastry filled with ricotta and sultanas and drizzled with honey. The pastry was nice and crispy and there was a decent dollop of ricotta in it. The pastry wasn't too sweet and I guess it was OK... still would have preferred something more chocolately :P<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A2106118-1EBA-440D-828A-68178036ADC5_zpspr44lsoh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A2106118-1EBA-440D-828A-68178036ADC5_zpspr44lsoh.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
All up, a decent meal at Pilu. Not the best 2 Hat restaurant we've been to, but it was decent - the food was a bit more traditional than other restaurants. I'm sure that if it was a good clear day, it would be a meal with an amazing food.<br />

Many people have told me that this pop-up restaurant offers crazy good and amazingly wow Mod Australian dishes and on a drizzly cold Friday lunch, I got to experience their astounding twists of flavours for myself.<br />
<br />
Fridays at Cafe Paci mean the option of a fix prix lunch menu ($45pp) for a four and a half course meal (half course = 'snack'). For this Friday, our "snack" was their cheese sticks. Not just any cheesesticks but 'Omg what on earth is this?!?!?' cheesesticks. These deceivingly simple-looking cheese sticks were uber flakey and crunchy, topped with this fairy-floss texture which was snap frozen honey, and pollen (elderflower?) of some sort. That - and just the aromas of freshly baked goodies. It blew my mind away. Pretty good start to the meal. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4412CAD7-A3E9-48F4-A32D-D7E39EFE7C70_zpswnk1fbm0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4412CAD7-A3E9-48F4-A32D-D7E39EFE7C70_zpswnk1fbm0.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
We also got a loaf of potato bread. I think the waiter said something about this bread being made of potato and wheat and brushed with molasses on top to give that crunch and sweetness. The butter was also really super soft and creamy and made on the house. It's hard to say no to freshly baked bread. However, this bread was a tad dense and a tad too sweet for me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/7F9068E1-1BD8-4DFA-B0E4-FF9C06AE900C_zpseqijalsh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/7F9068E1-1BD8-4DFA-B0E4-FF9C06AE900C_zpseqijalsh.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Our first real course was Pig Tail. I've never eaten pig tail and by choice, I probably wouldn't order pig tail. However, this came out looking pretty picture perfect. The pig tail was lovely and caramelised giving a good crunch (kind of like when you eat pork crackling when you dig into some pork belly), it was super duper tender and the fat-meat ratio made this cut of meat super juicy and melt-in-your-mouth. Don't forget the awesomely sticky and delicious sauce and the thinly sliced celeriac to balance it all out. They also had some dehydrated cumquats on top to give that citrousy zing to it (kind of like when you add orange to beef cheeks). Pretty tasty introduction to pig tail I think.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/2D3E8953-BFEB-40E2-BE20-5275BCE00051_zpsebpqjvd1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/2D3E8953-BFEB-40E2-BE20-5275BCE00051_zpsebpqjvd1.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Next up was a NZ snapper. Perfectly cooked fish with crispy skin. This fish sat in a pool of vadouvan (or as the waiter nicely explained - an Indian curry spice which goes well in French-inspired cooking because it blends well with garlic and shallots). There was also a lemon sauce, a super tasty spinach puree and some wilted and fresh spinach leaves. On top, there were these thin brown crispy slices of mustard. Very interesting and visually appealing dish. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6D7839A6-71D2-4596-ADB4-7F22859647AA_zpseepryoqo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/6D7839A6-71D2-4596-ADB4-7F22859647AA_zpseepryoqo.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
With the fish came a side of potatoes. This was potatoes with a creamy potato sauce. Yes - we are talking potato puree with loads of butter and loads of cream and ZOMG let me lick the bowl clean now! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D21E375E-C622-4B22-989C-2453D41DC89B_zps0lwfzde7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/D21E375E-C622-4B22-989C-2453D41DC89B_zps0lwfzde7.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Our next dish was a palate cleanser or pre-dessert of cucumber sorbet and yoghurt mousse. This cucumber sorbet was sooooooo refreshing! I don't know how to describe it properly... You know how cucumber is 'crunchy water'? Well, cucumber sorbet is cold, smooth, tasty, refreshing water? The light yoghurt foam, which had just the right balance of sweetness, complimented the cucumber sorbet nicely.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/B01DAE11-5598-4898-B42A-DBE06936A176_zpsp4so1oev.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/B01DAE11-5598-4898-B42A-DBE06936A176_zpsp4so1oev.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
Last course of the day was a milk sorbet with rhubarb, molasses syrup and meringue. The milk sorbet was a bit tasteless... kind of just cold texture. The thin meringue pieces were sugary goodness and the rhubarb was cooked nicely. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A3A7BFD1-B848-4112-8C2C-898072440FE1_zpsqc3arsd8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/A3A7BFD1-B848-4112-8C2C-898072440FE1_zpsqc3arsd8.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>

They serve a bibimbap buffet and unlimited pork cutlet rice for lunch, both for $11. We had that one time - good value, good tasting food. However, for this day, we came with a few friends for dinner.<br />
<br />
The banchan (side dishes) here were pretty deliciousness. I guess they would be making heaps of this stuff as some of these ingredients go on the bibimbap buffet spread also.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/B77058CA-F377-4EEB-8C02-8ED18F46039E_zps37o2htvc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/B77058CA-F377-4EEB-8C02-8ED18F46039E_zps37o2htvc.jpg" height="206" width="320" /></a></div>
We ordered a hotpot, fried chicken, and beef ribs to share. The hotpot was a good size and filled with delicious ingredients - beef, octopus, mushies and veges. The soup was sweet ish and really tasty. Seems tasty and healthy enough :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/7828B420-5FF4-4EBB-8997-0A0593948E3C_zpshcrwmgnz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/7828B420-5FF4-4EBB-8997-0A0593948E3C_zpshcrwmgnz.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
The marinated beef rib mini pot was absolutely deliciousness! Slightly too sweet but the beef was soooo melt-in-your-mouth. Zomg, I could eat this and nothing else. It was so good!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/C6423144-0D97-482F-94C3-3CA53456D441_zpsl1jjj0zf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/C6423144-0D97-482F-94C3-3CA53456D441_zpsl1jjj0zf.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
And just to round up the night with something slightly less healthy - korean fried chicken. Half spicy, half original. Lots of crunch. Tender, juicy chicken. Pretty awesome~<br />

I was pretty happy with this meal. I would definitely come back for more. Be aware, however, that this restaurant is tiny... so getting a table here may be a bit hit and miss.<br />

It's been windy. It's been windy. Perfect weather to curl up in bed. And perfect weather for a hot bowl of pho. As I work in Bankstown, going to Pho An (in Bankstown) on a non-work day did not seem appealing. We were also already frequent flyers at our favourite Flemington pho joint. So for something a bit different, we trekked to Viet town Canley Heights in search for a delicious bowl of noodle and we ended up at Huong Xua.<br />
<br />
Being early, we were seated quickly and service was relatively attentive. They order on a smart phone so it initially felt like the waitress was texting her friend whilst taking my order, but all was good as my delicious looking beef ball and beef tripe pho came out promptly. The soup tasted really really clean. Delicious aromas, not too sweet, not too overpoweringly herby, and did not leave me wanting to drink endless cups of water. To me - that's a pretty perfect bowl of pho :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F711AC32-5926-4FC9-9B6C-647A4B4542A1_zpso0owxhoh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/F711AC32-5926-4FC9-9B6C-647A4B4542A1_zpso0owxhoh.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
People all around seemed to be ordering this chicken thing, so we didn't want to be left out. Hubby ordered their steamed salty chicken noodle soup. The plate of chicken wasn't big but it sure looked tasty. You dip the steamed chicken in a salt and kaffir lime type mixture and it makes the chicken really tasty, tender and strangely addictive. The noodles and the soup base were also pretty good.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/55898697-6BBF-4673-B30F-9F46BE409BAF_zpsjie9fvot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/55898697-6BBF-4673-B30F-9F46BE409BAF_zpsjie9fvot.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
So I guess we were both pleased with our decision to trek to Viet-town, rain and all. Can't wait to go back for another bowl of super tasty noodle soup! (oh, and btw, we ordered the small bowl. They have this crazy massive bowl and a food challenge for all those big eaters - with the prize being a photo and the joyous pride of being able to keep the bowl)<br />

He seems to like coffee so I had every intention of taking him and my parents to Brewtown for some delicious coffee and cronuts. The plan was thwarted as a million other people also seemed to want coffee and cronuts that same day. Plan B? Cafe Shenkin we went.<br />
<br />
Having some larger communal tables up back, our party of 5 were seated quite promptly (I did call ahead to put my name down on their list 10 mins before we arrived). Coffee was good. Better than I expected. The milk and froth in my cappuccino melded in smoothly and creamily with my coffee.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/7438A73C-1ADF-4C5D-98BA-74A91B4EDC4B_zpsrzmnt43c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/7438A73C-1ADF-4C5D-98BA-74A91B4EDC4B_zpsrzmnt43c.jpg" height="271" width="320" /></a></div>
My mum ordered their Israeli Big Breakfast, only to be shocked by why it was so big. Two pita breads, two eggs, labne, smoked salmon, avocado, tuna and a cucumber and tomato tabouleh type salad made this plate look pretty impressive. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/634AD766-7D7A-4E7A-9124-F4B7EBC91EE6_zpsgqc4kmqk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/634AD766-7D7A-4E7A-9124-F4B7EBC91EE6_zpsgqc4kmqk.jpg" height="266" width="320" /></a></div>
I convinced my uncle to try their shakshuka with chorizo. He was initially confused as to how to tackle this big pan full of red soup - but one he dug in, he seemed to quite enjoy the middle eastern flavours. My only gripe with this is that it looked heaps watery. I'm pretty sure I can make less watery but just as tasty shakshukas at home!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/79237636-3C8C-4287-B925-04028AE4966C_zpslkcgcx5q.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/79237636-3C8C-4287-B925-04028AE4966C_zpslkcgcx5q.jpg" height="242" width="320" /></a></div>
Hubby got the Ziva - which was a olive and sesame puff pastry with hard boiled egg accompanied by a plethora of dips. The hommus was tasty and came as a generous serving. The other dips and chutneys were also really tasty - I just don't know what they're called...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4F7B2087-956F-4E42-829E-061E3D69877C_zpslcjivjor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/4F7B2087-956F-4E42-829E-061E3D69877C_zpslcjivjor.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
I ordered a spinach and feta puff pastry with fried egg and salad. I was a little underwhelmed by my choice. There was barely any puff to my puff pasty and any spinach and feta that was promised was scarce. The egg was just that... and nothing too impressive about my salad either. Rather a 'meh' dish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/20FD029D-2D18-4534-B1F4-1E57C8B5C54B_zpsulpnwdlj.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/20FD029D-2D18-4534-B1F4-1E57C8B5C54B_zpsulpnwdlj.jpg" height="250" width="320" /></a></div>
My dad went for non-middle eastern flavours. He played it safe with the 'eggs benny'. Two poached eggs on english muffins with hollandaise sauce drizzled on top. A classic that really can't go that wrong.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/93DFB5F1-05F5-4694-B6C4-DF865220A079_zpsohdntqbz.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u634/Bbsnoopy/Mobile%20Uploads/93DFB5F1-05F5-4694-B6C4-DF865220A079_zpsohdntqbz.jpg" height="201" width="320" /></a></div>
So all up, I think my uncle was pleased to have tried something different - something that Honky people don't have much exposure to. I felt like the coffee was good, the waiters were patient but the food was a bit hit and miss.<br />
