Rosso Antico Pizza Bar - Newtown

A colleague of mine had been raving on about an amazingly tasty new pizza joint in Newtown so when we needed to get takeaway in the area, we made a beeline for pizza. We didn't know how long it would take for them to make our pizzas so we decided to call ahead. My darling hubby called without even consulting their menu and ordered based on faith "just give me 3 of the most popular pizzas". What really shocked me was when they said that the order would be ready in 5 mins. We were not 5 mins away - floored on the accelerator!

On our way there, we rationalised that there was no way our pizzas could be done in 5 mins... maybe we just misheard 50 mins? But nope - lo and behold, pizza was waiting patiently for us as we pulled into the store 15 mins later. The pizzas that our kind waitress ordered for us was the Tartufo, the Napoli and the Prosciutto.

You could smell the Tartufo pizza before even opening the box - rich truffle smells just wafted out. This was an amazing pizza with italian sausage, porcini, fior di latte (cheese) and truffle paste. These toppings were a heavenly match, all sitting atop an amazing thin yet chewy base. YUM! Definitely dreaming of this pizza!
The Napoli was slightly less interesting. Loads of san marzano tomato paste with olives, anchovy, garlic and oregano. Quite tasty still... but I would have loved double the cheese! I guess this pizza is showcasing the tomato.
The last is my usual favourite (only this time, it is outdone by the truffle). The Prosciutto pizza had rocket, Parmesan, cherry tomatoes and of course - prosciutto. Loads of topping. Definitely appreciated the abundance of rocket. Very tasty indeed.
So the pizza were delicious even though they were sitting for some time on the counter. Imagine how tasty they would be if we ate in store! Definitely need to go back for some more truffle pizza! :)

400 Gradi - Brunswick (Melbourne)

World's best pizza and I don't have to fly half way around the world for it? That's right! The amazing pizza maker at 400 Gradi recently won the title of 'world's best pizza' for their Margherita pizza. As we were in Melbourne for the F1, we thought that we'd take the opportunity to check out just how good this pizza is. Situated on Lygon Street (and also another branch at the Crown), I was a little worried about the potential for it being a tourist trap type place. Luckily, the restaurant was far far away from the tourist bit of Lygon.

We had to order the Margherita - but we added anchovies to it. The pizza base was pretty amazing. It was thin and soft on the middle of the pizza, doughy and chewy on the edges and just that tiny bit of crispiness. The tomato base was rich and the cheese was really tasty and stretchy. When you eat it the traditional way (ie. you roll it all up), it was the perfect bite every time. The anchovies gave the whole pizza an extra dimension.
We also got a pasta - the tagliatelle con prosciutto crudo croccante. In English, it means pasta with crispy prosciutto, rocket and shaved parmesan. What's not to love about it? The pasta was cooked al-dente. There was a ton of salty prosciutto to it, and we got extra cheese to add to it if we wanted. It was pretty tasty. I wish we got a bit more rocket though~
We couldn't look past dessert. We ordered the tiramisu and the chocolate fondant. The tiramisu was really smooth and creamy. Good amount of coffee flavour in it. Quite liked it. The chocolate fondant came with vanilla bean ice-cream and a sprinkle of white chocolate shavings. The fondant was oozy on the inside... but not oozy enough for my liking. It was nice and chocolately and dense, and the ice-cream was yum. I was expecting a bit more from this dish but I guess it was OK.
So all up, pretty delicious pizza. Tasty pasta. Good desserts. Be sure to book if you are planning to come here - just in case!

Oliveto Ristorante & Bar - Rhodes

We live quite close to many yummy looking restaurants but it had taken us a few years to try out Oliveto - an Italian restaurant with a view of the bay. I was thinking that being kind of in the middle of nowhere, the restaurant would be quieter but it was the complete opposite. The restaurant was bustling and super super busy (and really quite loud) at 8pm on a Friday night.

Many items on the menu sounded delicious so it took us ages to decide what to order but at the end, we decided on the antipasto plate to share, a prosciutto rocket pizza with anchovies, and a mixed mushroom pappardelle.

The bread came with olive oil and balsamic. The bread was pretty dense - not my type. But hubby managed to polish it off with the antipasto. The platter came with prosciutto, beef carpaccio, chilli salami, cheese, artichoke, eggplant, capsicum, egg frittata, and olives (both green and black). All the meats were really really good. I especially liked the beef carpaccio - heaps tasty!

After the antipasto, we were both already quite full. There was no way hubby was to finish his pizza. However, it was really tasty somehow - I don't know if it was the cheese or the prosciutto or the anchovies but something in this pizza made it delectable.

My pappardelle smelt absolutely wonderous. Fresh herbs with mixed mushies and home-made pasta. YUM! It was mouth-wateringly delicious. The pasta was perfectly al-dente and mixed with just the right amount of flavoured olive oil.
Neither hubby nor I had enough stomach space to do dessert but looking around the restaurant, dessert looks amazing. As does their grilled seafood (def food envy there). We felt that Oliveto was a heaps tasty Italian restaurant which is well worth a re-visit.

Da Mario - Rosebery

I was catching up with a colleague after work today and she took me to a relatively new pizza joint in Rosebery. The brother to Pizza Mario, 'da Mario' is a open bistro-type restaurant serving pizzas and pastas, opened near Kitchen by Mike. We rocked up around 6.30pm and there were just a few table left in their no bookings dinner policy place.

We ordered a pizza each. My friend ordered a margherita pizza with prosciutto and rocket whereas I got the capricciosa (pizza with tomato, mozzarella, mushroom, artichoke, olives and ham). I wanted to add anchovies to my pizza but this was disallowed. They only do truely traditional pizzas - nothing extra, nothing subtracted. Even without my anchovies, both pizzas were really tasty and flavoursome. The base, however, probably wasn't my preferred. It was thin where the topping was - but slightly too soggy. The outer crust ring was a bit too doughy for my preference, but it was soft and bread-like, which my friend seemed to love. I guess that in general, it was a pretty tasty pizza ;)

capricciosa
Although we were both stuffed already, we couldn't pass the dessert which my friend recommended - the panna cotta with crushed pineapple and biscotti. The panna cotta was really smooth and creamy. It had the right amount of sweetness and matched with the pineapple really really well. On top of that, the biscotti bits added the right amount of crunch and almond flavour.
Panna Cotta
All up, it was a pretty good meal. We both left clutching our stomachs, quite satisfied.

Via Napoli - Lane Cove

We have heard tons about a supposedly awesome pizzeria in Lane Cove. We had to give it a go and we persevered despite the MASSIVE crowds waiting at 8.30pm. I have to say, the waiters walked so fast, they had to be on speed or a dozen Red Bulls. Attentiveness, however, was slightly lacking.

Our expectations were high as some of our friends had said that it's more awesome than Lucio's - and ZOMG Lucio was so crazily awesome that we'd even forgotten to take photos there! We had to resist ordering entree as we wanted to try two different pizza. One was the Via Napoli (which, according to our waiter was a "surprise!"). I was intrigued by the description - 'luigi's fantasy pizza' - had to order it! :P . The other was a Vesuvio which had tomato, buffalo mozarella, ricotta, ham, salami, pepper, basil on it.

Vesuvio
The pizzas here are really quite different to Lucio's. The crust is really chewy and had this super thick outside crust ring which neither of us were a huge fan of. There was a ton of toppings on it which did make it quite tasty and unfortunately, quite soggy. After eating the pizzas I have to say that I regretted not getting an antipasto entree - I think I would have preferred a ton of cured meats, cheese and bread sticks to the pizzas.

Bondi Pizza - Parramatta

Every time hubby and I drive past Bondi Pizza in Parramatta, it is packed out! So when my friend and I waltzed in on a weekday to find it much less busy, I was a bit surprised. The menu had plenty of choices for entree, wraps, pizzas and pastas. There was also a small sign for the lunch special - an 8" pizza with drink for $9.95. So two lunch specials were ordered!

We opted for the Grilled Chicken Pancetta and the Mexican Nacho. The chicken pizza had plenty of chicken pieces and pancetta slices and also a heap of rocket, all on a tasty BBQ sauce. The Mexican Nacho was even tastier (in my opinion). It had a heap of ground beef and beans, diced tomatoes throughout and a good drizzle of guacamole. Sour cream and sweet chilli sauce was also on top. Pizza and nacho feel all in one!

The pizzas weren't the best I've had recently but it was decent and tasty. Also, it was awesome value for a pizza and drink! ;)

Rosso Pomodoro - Balmain

Hubby's been craving good pizza for like EVER since coming back from Europe. May I stress the word good pizza. I've been putting off our hunt for pizza in Sydney as I've been slightly scarred by the plethora of non good pizza around but hubby promised me that this place - Rosso Pomodoro - is good.

Located at the bottom of some residential apartments in Balmain, I have to say, my heart sunk a little. Looked not much more than a local diner... but, to their credit, the place was packed and buzzing, with a waft of yumminess in the air. We decided to get a pizza each - as pizza is what this place is meant to be good for. Hubby ordered their 'special' for the night - the Gambero pizza (with anchovies added as an extra) and I ordered their Rocco pizza.

My Rocco pizza was pretty awesome! Topped with loads of rocket and prosciutto, shaved parmesan, mozarella and tomato, it was a pretty damn tasty disk of thin, crispy, crunchy, chewy dough. Pretty yum~
Rocco pizza
Hubby's Gambero pizza looked naked in comparison with tiny prawns scattered around. Funnily enough, it was actually still really tasty. Bits of tomato diced here and there, chilli scattered around and the anchovies (which was added as an extra) really finished this pizza nicely.
Gambero pizza
I have to say, I was surprised by the quality of these two pizzas. Definitely pretty yummy for Sydney standards. Not surprisingly, after having a pizza each we had no room in our stomachs for dessert >.<

Casa di Nico - King Street Wharf

For a large group gathering, we braved Casa di Nico at King Street Wharf (next to Cargo Bar). But as there were quite a few of us, we were spread over 2 long tables. The proximity and the noise level at the restaurant made it slightly more difficult to communicate with those not immediately near you.

The four of us who were closest to each other decided to share a few dishes. For starters, we had a woodfired pizza bread ($11.50). It looked alright and it smelled nice and herby. Unfortunately, it tasted really really bland. Yes it was nice and soft and bread-like, but other than the taste of plain bread, there was nothing to it. The herbs didn't stand out in taste. There was no salt. There was no cheese. Nada.
Woodfired pizza bread - $11.50
A side of greek salad ($10) was ordered with a prawn fettuccine ($28), and two pizzas - the Capricciosa ($26) and the Calzone Salssicia ($26). The prawn fettuccine was probably my favourite of the four items we ordered, and even then, it was rather average. The fettuccine was mixed with a healthy dosage of tomato sauce and an almost undetectable hint of chilli, garlic and basil. Of course, there were king prawns a plenty. The Capricciosa pizza was topped with ham, mushrooms, olives, tomato and artichoke. It wasn't bad pizza, but it wasn't amazing pizza. Likewise, the calzone (folded pizza) was loaded with Italian sausage, olives, spinach, semi-dried tomato and pesto. It was nice and cheesy (unlike the other one) but again, nothing too spectacular. And lastly, the side Greek Salad - though had a healthy heap of cucumber, tomato, red onion, kalamata olives and some scattered fetta, was nothing much to write home about.
Greek Salad - $10

Prawn Fettuccine - $28

Calzone Salssicia - $26
I also ordered a coffee to finish off the night. The affogato ($7) came with a nice shot of espresso and your normal vanilla icecream ball. 'Twas alright.

So all up, food here is pretty average. The waitresses are too busy to provide good attentive service, but I'm sure they kind of try... ish?

Libiyamo - Pyrmont

One of our friends has been going on about a restaurant in Pyrmont which serves awesome pizza. He said that his Italiano colleagues and friends all recommend this joint as the pizza is relatively authentic. So on one cold autumn night, we set out to check it out.

We ordered 4 pizzas, 2 pastas and a salad to share between the 6 of us. The pizzas were opted for were the Capricciosa, the Vegetariana, Romana, and the Margherita. All of the pizzas cam on a thin yet still chewy crust. The crispy and nicely burnt flavour from the wood-fired oven was a good addition, and a nice contrast, to the somewhat soggy middle of the pasta - made moist and floppy due to the thinness of the crust and tomato sauciness of the pizza. The toppings were quite appetising and whilst most of my friends found the anchovies on the Romana too salty, I thought that it was rather tasty.

Capricciosa - $23
ham, mushroom, italian sausage, roasted capsicum, mozzarella, tomato
Vegetariana - $22
Mushrooms, eggplant, olives, onion, roasted capsicum, tomato, mozzarella
Romana - $22
anchovies, capers, tomato, mozzarella
Margherita - $17
tomato, basil, mozzarella
For the pastas, we got sucked into the yummty description of the pasta of the day, which was a mud crab spaghetti with cherry tomatos. The pasta was flavoursome and rich, a touch on the salty side. And whilst there were massive chunks of crab lying on the side of a big heap of pasta, it was somewhat disappointing that there was no actual crab meat in the pasta itself. The other pasta was the tagliatelle al ragu di vitella. This was a tried and tested pasta (by our friends) but unfortunately, the chef must have misjudged the salt levels. Whilst the pasta was yummy and the veal was tender, it was sooooooo salty. We sent the pasta back to the kitchen and confused our waitress quite a bit by saying that we didn't want a new one.

The food here is good but probably not excellent. The pizza's are tasty but... we've probably had better elsewhere. The service here was rather apalling. I don't know if that's the norm, but our waitress looked really confused the whole night. We would order, she would give us a blank look in return. She asked if we wanted water. We said yes. She did not return with water until asked again. And if you're wanting a receipt... think again. We spent more than 10 minutes waiting for them to give us a receipt...which at the end, was a little docket with the correct 'total amount' but filled with items of things we did not order and none of the things we did.

Coffee Warehouse Cafe & Deli - Homebush

There's this cafe/deli on Parra Rd that I drive past quite often and every time, I drive past amazed. It could be a weeknight or a weekend... no matter what it is, and up to relatively late, there's always quite a crowd. So one night, I just had to drag my hubby to check it out.

This Cafe/Deli not only serves Di Stefano coffee, it also offers barista classes. There's screens on top of all the coffee machines that lets you eye how your coffee is made (usually to perfection). And though their coffee seems popular here, their pizza seems even more so.

Hence, for this night, we ordered a Chargrilled Baby Octopus ($12.50) and a Gamberi pizza ($25) to share. The chargrilled baby octopus was marinated with lemon & lime, parsley and a bit of chilli. Tossed well and chargrilled to be super tasty and tender. The octopus sat on top of fresh rocket and the whole this was doused with extra virgin olive oil. Was quite delicious.

Chargrilled Baby Octopus - $12.90

But the highlight was definitely the pizza. It smelled AMAZING! The pizza base was the perfect thickness. Crispy yet chewy at the same time. Smothered with rich tomato sauce, the perfect pizza base was topped with king prawns, bits of anchovy, fresh parsley and cheese. It was ZOMG deliciousness!!! One of the best pizza's I've had so far. The puzzle of why so many people ordered pizza here (even though it was all-you-can-eat ribs night) was finally solved :)

Gamberi pizza - $25

Looking around at the customers eating amazing looking desserts, my hubby and I just couldn't pass. I tested their gelato and chose pistachio and chocolate. The chocolate flavour was super super dark and rich. It wasn't too sweet and the cocoa flavours lingered in your mouth. It was yum. The pistachio, however, was a little bit of a let down. Maybe it was simply outshone by the chocolate.

Gelato (2 scoops) - $5

My partner's creme brulee ($8) sat temptingly on our table. Super thick caramelised sugar top was smooth rich coffee vanilla bean brulee. I'm not a creme brulee person and yet, I had the urge to gobble his dessert all up. I didn't need the biscotti which came with it though... the brulee was awesome enough :)

Creme Brulee - $8

All up, this was quite an outstanding dining experience. Sure, the service is slightly lacking in that they seemed short-staffed for the amount of customers but the food, the buzz, the atmosphere was all excellent. Definitely a place to return to for dinner again and again.

New York Slice - New York City

We had done our research and noted that the New York Slice is one of the 'must eat's in NYC. Instead of just jumping into any pizza joint (which are everywhere in NYC), my hubby decides - NO! Let's go out of our way to find a net-recommended one. So at the risk of missing the sunset views on the Empire State Building, we went pizza-slice hunting.

It was a tough trek, made tougher by the fact that my hubby forgot to bring the name and address of the joint. We almost didn't find it. We almost missed it, and gave up after 1/2 and hour of walking. Just as we were about the run back to the Empire State Building, we saw it! Bleeker Street Pizza.

Bleecker St Pizza

There was a window full of yummily ovened "pies" (ie. pizzas). Some with very tempting toppings. But to be traditional, we had to go with the margherita. A large, wide, thin, foldable pizza topped with tomato sauce and stringy mozarella. The base is what makes the new york slice a new york slice. It's thin and chewy in texture, yet crusty and crunchy all at the same time. How can something so thin and simple be so yummy?

The New York Slice does not disappoint. Yumminess to the core.

La Disfida - Haberfield

Super awesome piping hot wood fired pizzas on a cold winters day?

I'm all for it!

La Disfida is a cozy little Italian pizza joint in Haberfield, didn't allow us to make reservations so hence, we got there at 6pm to guarantee ourselves a seat. A good selection of entree, pizza menu and blackboard selection, we had a hard time trying to refrain from ordering everything on the menu.

After a long deliberation, we decided on 3 entree dishes: the calamari e zucchini fritti ($17), deep fried polenta with a blue cheese dipping sauce (from specials menu), and the porcini fettuccine (also from specials menu).

The zucchini and calamari came out in decent proportion. Smelt amazing! Tasted good too (until it cooled down) but I found the batter a little too floury and not crunchy enough. But that's probably what they were aiming for. Good thing was, it didn't feel too oily :)

lamari e zucchini fritti - $17

I'm not a polenta fan, but my friends were - and they absolutely loved this dish. Deep fried perfectly cut rectangular prisms of golden brownly crumbed soft mushy polenta in a hecticly strong and flavoursome blue cheese mixture. If I were a polenta and blue cheese fan, I can imagine that this would be perfect - but sadly, I'm not.

deep fried polenta with blue cheese
The creamy fettucini with porcini mushrooms and rocket, however, was absolutely perfectly up my alley. It came out smelling delicious - getting all those stomach acids going - then lived up to its promise by providing al dente pasta with aromatic porcini and tasty rocket leaves. YUM. If I wasn't dining with friends, I would have absolutely hogged this dish and claimed it as mine.

Porcini fettuccine

So this restaurant is famous for it's wood-fired pizzas. They have a huge brick wood-fired pizza oven on the bottom level and hard working pizza makers spinning dough, topping the dough and ovening the round disk of goodness. We ordered 2 pizzas - the quattro stagione ($22), and the barletta ($22).

The quattro stagione (or, 'four seasons), was a thin crispy chewy tomato pizza base topped with artichokes, olives, ham and mushrooms. The mozarella was a little bit scarce and the pieces were cut a little be large anf uneveny, but it was definately very very tasty. My favourite bit of the pie was probably the artichokes which were soft and juicy and deliciousness~

quattro stagione - $22

The barletta was again, a tomato-based thinly crusted pizza, this time, topped with prosciutto crudo and basil, pepper to taste and olive oil drizzled over. Again, I would have preferred a little more mozerella, but it was very yummy anyway.

Barletta - $22

After those epic savoury dishes, we were all up for a sweet change. I ordered the tiramisu ($10). This was really light, richly coffee-flavoured, with a uber awesomely dusted chocolate coating. Seemed authentically italian to me! (but what would I know?)

tiramisu - $10

My friends ordered from the desserts special menu ($11 each). There was a cannoli with ricotta stuffing and a sticky date nutty biscuit thing. They seemed to think that this was alright. The cannoli was very crispy and the ricotta was really creamy but I'm not a fan of sticky date fig thing.

dessert special - $11

pannacotta - $11

The other dessert was a pannacotta. Very smooth, silky looking wobbling thing that my friends seemed to enjoy muchly.

All up, the food here was pretty awesome. Service is good and friendly enough, although at times, they speak a little too quickly. Ambiance is cozy and chillaxy - just the way you'd want it for a catch up with friends.

Giovanni Pastrami - Oahu

After the shockingly huge amount of food we experienced the previous night at BLT, we thought we had learnt our lesson ... but... at brunch the next day, it was obvious that we didn't learn well enough.

We stumbled across Giovanni Pastrami at around 2pm. My partner ordered a burger (a mini burger to be exact), and I ordered scrambled eggs with hash. My partner also decided to order an appetiser of nachos to share (it was like $5 so it had to be small... right?).

The nachos came out first. And it was like... HUGE. A full serving by Australian standards. It probably didn't have enough beef or beans in it, but it was nice and crisp and cheese and relatively tasty. By about half of this dish, my partner and I were both... umm... full ?

nachos (small)

Then came cheese pizza. Fresh from the oven, still sizzling hot melted cheese as it came out. Apparently, these are complementary when you dine in happy hour. We got TWO slices each (and these are BIG slices). They were actually extremely yummy - stringy melted cheese, tomato paste was just the right portion and the base was nice and chewy. I probably ate like 1 of these.
complementary cheese pizza

My partner's "mini" burger ended up being a quad of mini burgers. Four burgers accompanied by a generous serving of fries which were crispy and golden brown. The burgers were simply a beef patty, melted cheese, all on a potato bun. Not bad at all.

mini burgers with fries

Then finally, my scrambled eggs came out. Mushrooms, spanish onions and a dablle of bacon with a super awesome patty of hash. The has was delicious but I think I would have preferred my scrambled eggs a little less done. This came accompanied with a bagel and cream cheese and jam. The bagel was freshly hot, nicely chewy but unfortunately, I could barely eat any of it :(

So this is our left-overs. Hectic huh? Could have been a full meal left. We managed to doggy bag it and ate it for a midnight snack LOL.
